We South Carolina's top experts in rodent control. We are not a typical Columbia rat removal or pest control company. We don't treat rats or mice like insects, because they are not - they are mammals! You can't just use poison to get rid of them, like you can with insects. Unlike most Columbia pest control, we focus on complete and permanent solutions. We don't just use poison every month. We solve your rodent problem forever, by following these steps:
- Inspect the entire house, ground to roof, and the attic
- Seal shut all entry areas, no matter how small, with steel
- Set a dozen or more rat or mouse traps in the house and attic
- Remove all rodents as they are caught and monitor for activity
- Once there is no more activity and no more caught, we're done
- When necessary, we clean rodent droppings, replace insulation, and repair chewed electric wires
Columbia Rodent Removal Tip:
How do rats use pheromones to communicate?
Talking is not one of the first things that pops to mind when you're thinking about rats. More often than not, you'll be thinking "ick, get it out of here!". But it's worth noting, in spite of all this widespread disgust at the poor little rodents, that rats are actually highly intelligent creatures. If that's not obvious from the thousand ways they find to sneak into your home, then it might become so when we look at the intricate way they communicate with one another.
Because yes, rats, too, communicate and they use pheromones to do it.
First, what are pheromones?
The term pheromone refers to secretion from your body that is used to send certain signals to other members of your species. A famous example is a pheromone the human body releases to attract sexual partners, but pheromones can be used for a lot more than mating.
Much the same as any other species, rats secrete different types of pheromones to signal different emotions. A rat will secrete a powerful and pungent pheromone when it's stressed out or anxious.
Adult rats also often resort to the release of pheromones to keep themselves safe from other rats. When an adult rat enters another's rat territory (or generally comes into its immediate vicinity), the coming rat will release a certain pheromone to let the existing rat know that it is here. This is believed to reduce attacks and altercations between the rats.
Rats use the same pheromone to alert their very young litters that they've reached the nursing stage. This is called the "releaser" pheromone.
Then, of course, we have the "primer" pheromone which is used to communicate when female rats have become fertile. Much like the aforementioned human pheromone, the primer in rats is used to signal that the female in question is ready to mate and to send out sexual signals to the nearby males. Now, while the call to action, so to speak, is given by the female, the male rats are not completely without a role in the sexual interaction. The male rat, when it senses the primer from the female, issues out its own pheromones in response, which are considered some of the most powerful rat pheromones. In other situations, these particular pheromones are thought to be so strong that they even lead to miscarriage in pregnant female rats.
Lastly, rats use various other types of communication pheromones to fill in the blanks about nearby animals. They use different types of pheromones to identify another animal in their vicinity and to ascertain danger levels. Yet other pheromones can be used to signal certain tell-tale signs about the health status of other rats, which can prove vital to their survival. For example, if you're a rat and you become aware that another rodent has just entered your territory, it's natural to want to know as much as possible about said rat - is it young or old? Weak or strong? Big or small? All these answers can be gauged through pheromones, and help the rat know how to approach a situation.
Do rats communicate in any other way?
Yes, rats also use ultrasounds (also sometimes referred to as chirping noises) to communicate feelings, warnings, and other such things. Since the average rat has a much finer, more sensitive ear and hearing, it is able to perceive sounds that the human ear cannot. And it is these sounds that allow them to survive and even thrive along with the human population in most urban areas.
